After a long search I finally discovered this 1749 THÉÂTRE DE LA MARQUISE DE POMPADOUR in a Louis Douceur binding that was recently sold at Auction for 4.950 euros (click here to see the details of Lot # 173) |
In Comparative Diagram 2, I show the imprints shared by both bindings, this is a rare match to find these tools together on the same binding, the large leaf is very rare. In comparative Diagram 3, below I show another critical imprint proof, the d-46 pair also found on another 1749 Henault. |
After hours of searching high and low on the internet I finally found another Douceur binding with imprints that match my 1749 Henault, and it is another that concerns Madame de Pompadour and her théatre des Petits Appartements. Its very satisfying to think that my little eBay binding is measuring up to such standards. Again we see the importance of the date possibly being bound around 1750, and also with the relatively rare imprints d-46a and b. Some of these tools did not last, I have still to find a few of them on any other binding. |
Another lucky find, a 1747 binding with the same palette at the base of the spine as our 1749 Henault. This makes three examples of this palette all around 1750, the imprints therefore on this 1747 binding are important chronologicaly. See Comparative Diagram 8 for another example of d-46 imprints, this with those above suggesting that this was a favorite early (1749) tool. |
On the next page we are going to look at signed Douceur bindings. |

Even experts are sometimes wrong, before you spend thousands on a book, please do your own research! Just because I say a certain binding can be attributed to le Maitre isn't any kind of guarantee, don't take my word for it, go a step further and get your own proof. In these pages I have provided you with a way of doing just that. |
