The binding shown above is found in the Catalogue de reliures du XVe au XIXe siècle, en vente à la librairie Gumuchian & Cie. [Belles Reliures, Catalogue XII.] Published by Gumuchian & Cie. [1929], Paris, 1929. This large folio sized catalogue, is as good as you can get for high quality reproductions. Their color reproductions are not perfect, we have to remember that at this time color photography hardly existed let alone color printing, however there is more than enough detail in this for us to make our comprative diagrams. |
In 1758 the imprints shown in Comparative Diagram 1, pd-40a-4 and 40b-4 made their first timid appearance, now however in 1761 they are being used extensively as well as the small imprint pd-80 was also also a newcomer in 1758 but now looking to be a regular. |
The Dubuisson palette that was used to create roulette like border is shown in various examples in Comparative Diagram 3, this appeared on the Almanach Royals in 1754 and 1758 as well as here in 1761, another example is Michon's planche XXXI (shown on this page), it is example D in Comparative Diagram 3, and probably dates to 1761 as well, so this is an important diagnostic and chronologically significant imprint. Michon's planche XXXI binding, that he attributes to Derome is very similar to the binding that we examined on the previous page, and perhaps it too dates to around 1761. We know that Pierre-Paul Dubuisson died in the year of 1762, we do not know what he died of, or whether he was able to work that year or even in the year before. I attribute these Almanach Royal bindings to him although it may very well be that someone else in his workshop was actually doing the work in 1761. The appearance of new tools and a difference in the thickness of the imprints may point to this possibility. |

Even experts are sometimes wrong, before you spend thousands on a book, please do your own research! Just because I say a certain binding can be attributed to le Maitre isn't any kind of guarantee, don't take my word for it, go a step further and get your own proof. In these pages I have provided you with a way of doing just that. |
