Heures nouvelles à l'usage des laïcs.

Paris: P.G. Simon, 1743. in-12.

Reliure en maroquin bordeaux à décor rocaille (plaque) aux armes de France,

Paris, atelier de Pierre-Paul Dubuisson, vers 1742-1743.

Paris. Bibliothèque nationale de France. Réserve des livres rares. RES P-B-47

The binding shown above is found in the online collection of the Bibliotheque nationale de France (click here to see it) This is an early plaque by Dubuisson that is not found in Rahir's classification. This binding also contains the ticket Pierre-Paul Dubusson and is perhaps the earliest record of it's appearance. This is very interesting because it suggests that Dubuisson was working as a binder/doreur before he supposedly received his licence as binder in 1746 (Reçu maître le 2 mai 1746) and although the BnF lists him in activity (En activité de 1746 environ à 1762) from 1746 we may discover that he was in fact decorating bindings from 1740 or earlier.

Binding executed in Paris around 1742-1743 by Pierre-Paul Dubuisson, whose engraved ticket (etiquette) is glued to the back of the 3rd guard, facing the title page, bearing his name and address before detailing all his qualities/talents/abilities): "Du Buisson the son (of Rene Dubuisson) Binder - Doreur (address) Rue St Jaque in Paris... offering gold tooled armories of all crowned heads" etc. The almanac was probably a gift to a member of the royal family, as evidenced by the gilded armorial block in the center of the boards.

Lets think about this for a minute, here is Dubuisson's ticket in a binding destined to be given to some member of the royal family and officially he is not yet a binder? I wonder if there has not been some typo somewhere concerning the date that Pierre-Paul Dubuisson received his papers as a binder.

A word of Caution

Even experts are sometimes wrong, before you spend thousands on a book, please do your own research! Just because I say a certain binding can be attributed to le Maitre isn't any kind of guarantee, don't take my word for it, go a step further and get your own proof. In these pages I have provided you with a way of doing just that.
