We have already studied the Dubuisson mosaic binding shown on the left (142) on another page (click here to see it). The binding on the right is from the British Library Database of Bookbindings shelfmarked Davis540 it can seen online here. Below I have copied the database information on Davis540, and we can see that they have attributed this binding to J A Derome. Last year while investigating this question of whether J A Derome ever actually did decorate a binding, we found proof of what a J A Derome binding looks like and the gold tooled imprints on that binding (click here to see it) do not match those found on Davis540.

We are going to show conclusive proof that this binding was decorated with the tools of Pierre-Paul Dubuisson. I can imagine poor Dubuisson rolling in his grave thinking that the British Library has his binding on display, and attributes it to J A Derome! Along with all the other bindings they mention in their list. This is a magical binding that stands out a mile over the others, lets look at the gold tooled imprints.

Even though the digital image resolution of the Davis540 has been increased in the Wikipedia Commons GWToolset mediafile, it still is not as good as a 300dpi scan. We can see however in Comparative Diagram 1, that imprint 57d matches the Davis540 imprints, this is a very small imprint that I found on a spine compartment which is the reason for it's unusual catalogue number. In Comparative Diagram 4 I have resorted to using my own 1200dpi scan of these imprints, and although the Davis540 imprints of this type pd-40 are blurred we can still recognize the tell tale signs that indicate these imprints derive from the same tool. These imprints are so small that the slightest variation in the amount of gold put down, can make the imprint look quite different comparatively. However this tiny tool has such specific characteristics that we can be 90% certain that the Davis540 imprints are the same as the pd-40 imprints, and therefore be certain that this binding was decorated with Dubuisson's tools probably by Dubuisson himself.

A word of Caution

Even experts are sometimes wrong, before you spend thousands on a book, please do your own research! Just because I say a certain binding can be attributed to le Maitre isn't any kind of guarantee, don't take my word for it, go a step further and get your own proof. In these pages I have provided you with a way of doing just that.
