etiquette

I found this actual photograph of a J A Derome etiquette on a Sotheby's auction page (click here to see it) It is found in a 1745 printing of LES AMOURS PASTORALES DE DAPHNIS ET CHLOÉ

Longus

LES AMOURS PASTORALES DE DAPHNIS ET CHLOÉ (TRADUITES DU GREC EN FRANÇOIS PAR JACQUES AMYOT). [PARIS,] 1745.

Petit in-4 (204 x 154 mm).

Sotheby's do not show you the actual binding but after a long search I actualy found a photo of it on a more recent auction page (click here to see it). Sotheby's appraised this book as being worth between 3000 and 5000 euros in June 2015, it came up again for auction in 2017 with Ader Norman, it was appraised at between 300 to 400 euros and sold for 610 euros! ... 'n'importe quoi' as the French say.

We don't know if J A Derome was even a doreur, perhaps he had all his bindings decorated by a doreur after he finshed binding them. His etiquette states simply that the book was bound by J A Derome. However if he did apply gold tooling as well then these might be his tools and are well worth examining. You will notice after study of bindings by Derome le jeune, that he had a very similar tool that he often used as a centerpiece in the spine compartments, in a similar fashion to the one shown here however it was distinctly different in having more leaves. (note: this page was written before discovering real J A Derome bindings with his own tools.(see this page)

A word of Caution

Even experts are sometimes wrong, before you spend thousands on a book, please do your own research! Just because I say a certain binding can be attributed to le Maitre isn't any kind of guarantee, don't take my word for it, go a step further and get your own proof. In these pages I have provided you with a way of doing just that.
