HISTOIRE UNIVERSELLE 1744.
Reliure aux armes du Duc d'Aumont
5 CARTES Tome V in-4

On this page I want to show a few of the details that we have not covered so far such as the marbled endpapers shown above. I have drawn comparisons to the collection of Almanach Royals in the Royal Library of Spain, however we do not see this kind of marbled paper in those Almanachs, there are some examples of marbled paper however they are mainly of the tourniquet type (click here to see a 1759 Almanach Royal example)

1752 Almanach Royal

Comparative Diagram 1 - headbands - 1744 eBay example vs 1752 Almanach Royal example.

The headbands on the Almanach Royals in the Royal Library appear to have been 2 pink strands with a white from 1734 until 1750 after this we find the same headband color combination as found on our 1744 eBay binding one blue one pink and a white. While I was searching through the Almanachs, I stumbled across a second 1745 Almanach Royal, and this was quite different to the first one, in fact it was more along the lines of the previous year 1744. However this example had the same inner dentelle/roulette as the previous 1745, and in this example it was easier to find the flaws that match our eBay inner dentelle/roulette. This I show in Comparative Diagram 2. This is irrefutable proof that the same roulette has been employed on both bindings.

Comparative Diagram 3 - 1744 spine compartment fleuron examples

In Comparative Diagram 3, I have assembled some high resolution photos of this spine compartment fleuron, they are not all at the same scale, as I only want to show what a single photo will not. In each example certain parts have been obscured or there are parts missing due to this fleuron being placed very close to the side of the compartment. Long story short, we can guess or imagine the complete fleuron from these few examples. Most unusual is the fact that there are 11 petals, this I have demonstrated with green lines... if we ever run across this fleuron again the 11 petals will give her away as well as the cross hatching in the center. This is a very detailed imprint considering the size is only a few millimeters wide.

Comparative Diagram 4 - 1744 spine compartment imprint examples

In Comparative Diagram 4, I show greatly enlarged examples of this unusual pod decoration, not only does it have its own easily identifiable excentricities but it is also accompanied by two satellite rings. Below I show a palette used in the spine compartments, this I have seen before but where...

I don't think I will ever get tired of looking at this amazing arrangement that seems somehow very familliar and yet is somehow unlike all others.

A word of Caution

Even experts are sometimes wrong, before you spend thousands on a book, please do your own research! Just because I say a certain binding can be attributed to le Maitre isn't any kind of guarantee, don't take my word for it, go a step further and get your own proof. In these pages I have provided you with a way of doing just that.
