In Comparative Diagram 1, we see an enlarged detail of the W.Cat.204 dentelle. In the middle of this detail and sitting right on the outer roulette, we see an important imprint that Barber failed to record. I mentioned this on the previous page however I wish to elaborate on this omission of Barber that tarnished his reputation as a keen observer of 18th century dentelle tools. |
In Comparative Diagram 2 we have collected all the W.Cat.204 gos-5-2 examples, the details of this imprint are not always so evident, however looking at the whole collection one can get an idea the actual form, even from this low resolution reproduction. |
In Comparative Diagram 3 I have extracted a W.Cat.204 example and compare it with another Gosselin example of this tool. Why he might have had two is a mystery, but we can now prove that he did. |
In Comparative Diagram 4, we find Barber's catalogue items for this type, if he had of recorded this tool it would have to show up in this list, however the only similar tool is FL 189 which is, as I said on the previous page is from the Dubuisson workshop, we will get to that in a moment. |
In Comparative Diagram 5, we see what must be the most famous example of this type 5 tool. Jean-Pierre Jubert placed his signature inside of it (click here to see Jubert's famous signed binding).
Someone can show us Derome tickets but they have no significant value compared to a signature in gold right within the decoration itself, this is a 100 percent proof, but the real importance is that with the signature we find bonafide Jubert tools that are beyond dispute. I my mind such a signed binding outweighs all others when it comes to the research of decorative tools, Now how can we explain that Barber never saw this signed Jubert binding,
It is reproduced in color in Gruel's Manuel de Amateur de reliures. I. p.114 and also in Edouard Rahir's1936 catalogue, La bibliothèque de feu Édouard Rahir, ancien libraire Vol. IV, item 1140.
Both of these publications are absolutely required reading for anyone who wants to become an expert in French Decorative Bookbinding.
If Barber had of seriously studied the imprints found on Jubert's signed binding he would have had a lot of trouble with his Derome le jeune attributions, as many were actually decorated by Jubert with his own tools. On the next paqe we will look at the question of FL 189 and perhaps put a stop to the Michon J.A. Derome conspiracy. |

Even experts are sometimes wrong, before you spend thousands on a book, please do your own research! Just because I say a certain binding can be attributed to le Maitre isn't any kind of guarantee, don't take my word for it, go a step further and get your own proof. In these pages I have provided you with a way of doing just that. |
