You will notice that four of the six volumes shown above were also shown on the previous page being found in a recent Camille Sourget Catalogue (36) and you may have noticed that the decoration of the spine panels is identical to the CANTIQUES binding shown on the first page. The spines of the two volumes on the right are also identical with the exception of the centerpiece fluron, This I show in Comparative Diagrams 1 and 2.

Comparative Diagram 1 - enlarged spine detail

In Comparative Diagram 1, we see an enlarged detail of the Lot 94 spines and in Comparative Diagram 2 we see the centerpiece fleuron (del-p-1) Example A has been extracted directly from the Sotheby's photograph while example B is a reconstruction of this fleuron wherein I have attempted to compensate for the photographic distortion, this is a more accurate version of this imprint however not to be considered as a final type model, the margin of error may be plus or minus 2 mm. Barber has classified fleurons of this type as Pomegranates and shows 23 variants however none match exactly our Delorme example that is shown as del-p-1 (p for pomegranates). I must admit to being far too lax in the recording of these imprints. Delorme had at least two varieties, a large example that we can call del-p-2. The main reason that I have not previously catalogued this imprint is that I have yet to find an example that is complete (see this page).

Comparative Diagram 3 - various Pomegranate examples

In Comparative Diagram 3, I show some examples of the pomegranate fleurons, while they look very similar there are distinct differences. Jubert's jj-p1 has dots on either side of the step, Delorme's example has no such dots, while his large variety del-p-2 (incomplete) has a stem termination pointing left while Gosselin's stem is pointing right. (see this page).
Below this diagram I show a classic Delorme dentelle binding from 1774 where we see in the spine panels del-p-1 and the palette PAL 36 (see this page).

A word of Caution

Even experts are sometimes wrong, before you spend thousands on a book, please do your own research! Just because I say a certain binding can be attributed to le Maitre isn't any kind of guarantee, don't take my word for it, go a step further and get your own proof. In these pages I have provided you with a way of doing just that.
