This Almanach Royal was listed on eBay by one of my favorite sellers who always furnishes a full range of excellent photos with each of his items. In as much as I have researched previously this rare type of dentelle, I was quick to make some diagrams to try to discover if this was the same one that I found on two separate Semaine Sainte Collombat plaque bindings and designated as a Scrolling Leaf Border (see this) We can show, in due process that these bindings derive from the Dubuisson workshops. |
In Comparative Diagram 2, I point out with blue arrows a small defect in the the design of the scrolling leaf border, that repeats every 6th unit in both examples. Also the yellow dots are pointing out a difference that is better shown by the yellow arrow where we see that the end of a leaf has detached. This diagram then, proves that these scrolling leaf borders were created with the same tool. Barber (page 318, Vol 1, 2013) found a very large example of this tool which he describes as "a strip frame block with six repeated curling fronds" It was very exciting to win this rare treasure on eBay and when it arrives here I will be able to scan it at high resolutions and produce more precise information about this Scrolling Leaf Border that may have been executed by Rene or his son Pierre-Paul Dubuisson. |

Even experts are sometimes wrong, before you spend thousands on a book, please do your own research! Just because I say a certain binding can be attributed to le Maitre isn't any kind of guarantee, don't take my word for it, go a step further and get your own proof. In these pages I have provided you with a way of doing just that. |
