Jean Antoine de BEAUMONT DES JUNIES.

Ordo divini officii recitandi misaeque celebrande, indiecesi rhedonensi, Pro anno domini 1759. Pascha occurrente 15 Aprilis. De mandato illustrissimi ac reverendissimi D.D. Joannis - Antonii De Beaumont Des Junies, Episcopi Rhedonensis.
Apud Jacobum Vatar , Rhedonis (chez Jacques Vatar, à Rennes). Illuftriffimi ac Reverendiffimi D. D. Epilcopi Typographum. 1 vol. in-8 relié de 64 pages

Jean-Antoine de Toucheboeuf-Beaumont des Junies, born in 1705 in Quercy and died in 1762, was a French Catholic ecclesiastic, Bishop of Rennes from 1759 to 1761.

He was the son of Antoine de Toucheboeuf-Beaumont, baron des Junies, lord of Ferrires and Rochetaillade, and of Charlotte de Montalembert-Monbeau. A doctor of theology at the Sorbonne, he was vicar general and grand archdeacon of Tours before being confirmed bishop of Rennes on April 9, 1759. Ordained, on May 13, in the chapel of the seminary of Saint-Sulpice, in Paris, by Arthur Richard de Dillon, archbishop of Toulouse, assisted by Jean-Louis de La Marthonie de Caussade, bishop of Meaux and Armand de Roquelaure, bishop of Senlis. However he had little opportunity to distinguish himself as the Boshop of Rennes, being forced to resign on May 20, 1761 for reasons of health and was buried in 1762.

Pierre-Paul Dubuisson became the official Bookbinder of the King on October 12 1758, and we might imagine that he would have been very busy from then on. Therefore when Bishop Beaumont submitted his new book to the Dubuisson atelier around May of 1759 asking for it to be decorated with an updated armorial and an elaborate dentelle à l'oiseau. one wonders when Dubuisson might have been able to do it, or whether, instead, it might have been Delorme who executed the decoration. In any case it would have had to have been accomplished before 1762 the year that both Dubuisson and Beaumont passed into the next world. Perhaps the decoration was completed in 1759, and see here a sort of time capsule of the decorative methods and tools employed by the workshop at that time.

I found this binding on eBay in March of 2024, at that time I had sort of retired from actively researching bookbindings and more particularly buying books on eBay that can be a dangerous addiction. Especially when suddenly, one discovers a rare Dubuisson dentelle à l'oiseau, impossible to resist such a treasure and mine of decorative information.

On the next few pages we are going to explore with high resolution images, the gold tooling found decorating this precious example.

A word of Caution

Even experts are sometimes wrong, before you spend thousands on a book, please do your own research! Just because I say a certain binding can be attributed to le Maitre isn't any kind of guarantee, don't take my word for it, go a step further and get your own proof. In these pages I have provided you with a way of doing just that.
