Comparative Diagram 1 - Dubuisson spine panel (Catalogue des livres du cabinet de Monsieur Girardot de Prefond
written by Guillaume-Francois De-Bure, 1757) vs spine panel from item 141

141 text

In Comparative Diagram 1, we see something very interesting, the spine panel from Item 141 shows so many similar characteristics that there can be little doubt that these two panels were executed contemporaneously, that is to say at least by 1757! Having detailed now, in the past 3 pages enough evidence to leave no doubt that these bindings derived from the Dubuisson workshops, how then can one explain this item 141? Here is a 1743 publication with identical Dubuisson tools and a supposed Derome le jeune ticket inside, (according to the catalogue information) Although it would seem impossible, there is one possible way it might have happened, that would be if Derome commissioned Delorme to do the decorations sometime in the early 60's, but that is a long shot. More likely is that the Derome ticket is a fake. I searched the internet for this set thinking that they might have resurfaced in a recent auction, however the search came up empty. Please let me know if you have seen these bindings anywhere.

Comparative Diagram 2 - Dubuisson imprint pair pd-39

In Comparative Diagram 2, we compare the Dubuisson pd-39 pair of imprints. The ANL high resolution reproduction of these imprints gives us a better picture of these small tools, that have been employed in an identical fashion in the two spine panel examples above. Even more striking is the use of pd-81 and pd-80-2 shown in Comparative Diagrams 3 and 4.

Comparative Diagram 5 - Dubuisson imprint pair pd-29-12

In Comparative Diagram 5, we see a small 5 petaled motif, (pd-29-12) that is very rare, in fact I have I have not catalogued it previously in this exact form. Thanks to the high resolution of these imprints (1200dpi) we can see a particular detail that appears in all examples, namely a small projection between the 3 o'clock and 5 o'clock petals. I have arranged these imprints in the diagram as I found them, each example maintains the original orientation, suggesting that the person who applied them, kept the tool in the same position in his hand for each imprint and that he may have applied all of these very small details one after another without interruption. In Comparative Diagram 6 we see an even smaller imprint, appearing as a tiny 6 petaled flower, I show 8 examples from which we have to guess what this imprint would look like ideally. The center is probably not open as is the center of pd-29-12. If we could see this imprint at a 2400dpi resolution, I think we might see that not all the petals are of the same shape, certain examples appear crescent shaped.

A word of Caution

Even experts are sometimes wrong, before you spend thousands on a book, please do your own research! Just because I say a certain binding can be attributed to le Maitre isn't any kind of guarantee, don't take my word for it, go a step further and get your own proof. In these pages I have provided you with a way of doing just that.
