The reproduction of this binding is found in a Christie's auction catalogue COLLECTION MICHEL WITTOCK 2EME PARTIE, RELIURES A DECOR Paris 8 November 2004, (click here to see it). I knew I had seen Bertrand's fer à l'oiseau somewhere before, but I didn't remember it being in this same auction, very strange and it is probably no accident that there are two Bertrands in Wittock's collection. |
Unfortunately this is still the same 2004 low resolution reproduction, however as the binding is smaller they have reproduced it at a better size than the previous example as far as detail goes. |
In this corner detail we see more proof of the invasive speicies theory, we find what Barber calls ornamented scrolls taking over the dentelle compositions, and note the date of 1782. In as much as I was sure I had seen Bertrand's fer à l'oiseau before, I am also sure I have seen this corner wheel before now I just have to find it again. |

Even experts are sometimes wrong, before you spend thousands on a book, please do your own research! Just because I say a certain binding can be attributed to le Maitre isn't any kind of guarantee, don't take my word for it, go a step further and get your own proof. In these pages I have provided you with a way of doing just that. |
