The Bibliotheque nationale de France provides us with a list of important binders that links to biographic information for each as well as listing example bindings that have been digitized in Gallica. Now I have mentioned this before, when it comes to Derome le jeune, none of the example bindings shown were actually decorated by Derome. One can only guess that the 'experts" in the BnF have not been able to correctly identify his work. Part of the reason for this is that Derome employed other decorators to do the job and then added his ticket. Barber could not tell the difference between the work of Jubert and Derome or the work of Gosselin and Derome, thus he mixed these artists and the resultant mess has been followed by the BnF, yet here is a true Derome binding that they do not show and it is not easy to find. However in the information about this Manuscript binding we find this notation: "Reliure de maroquin rouge à décor doré à la dentelle, tranches dorées (Paris, atelier de Nicolas-Denis Derome, entre 1764 et 1768)". So they know full well this is a Derome, but do not show it in his list of bindings but instead show bindings by other binders! I should be glad that they have not solved this problem, as it gives my work a reason to exist. Now interestingly they state that Derome made this binding sometime between 1764 and 1768. I think that the earlier date is more likely on the basis of the palettes. However I am sure a documentalist can answer these questions, which revolve around who actually paid Derome to make this binding, I did not find this manuscript listed in De Bure le jeune's1769 catalogue Supplement à la Bibliographie instructive, ou Catalogue des livres du cabinet de feu m. Louis Jean Gaignat. It seems likely that Gaignat had it bound by Derome but if it is not in his catalogue then how and when did De Bure get it and then sell it to La Vallière? More importantly we discover in the BnF catalogue information that this Gallica digital reproduction was made fortunately before a restoration in 2014. That restoration may have removed the critical palette information that we see at the bottom and top of the spine (both are damaged) I have on a previous page (click here to see it) commented on the importance of this Jacques-Antoine Derome palette (jad-p-1) and accompanying 6 rings in the panels. This is proof positive that we have found a key to identifying the ultra rare J.A Derome bindings, because his son kept this ungainly palette in use for years after his father's death. In Comparative Diagram 2 we see then, the jad-p-1 palette and six ring panel, It is quite amazing to think that Derome le jeune kept this palette and spine panel combination in use long after his father had used these identical tools in this arrangement. |
In Comparative Diagram 4, we notice that the decoration of the Français 4274 has a lot in common with the C11d6 binding found in the British Library, however the spines of these bindings are quite different and it may be that C11d6 was made quite a number of years after Français 4274. In Comparative Diagram 5 which was made a few years ago, I tried to find some sort of chronological order in these bindings, however it may turn out that Derome le jeune made the spines quite differently depending on the whims of his clients, so it might not be wise to go too far in attempting to order the chronology in terms of the spine decoration. In reviewing this work I have rediscovered something that was a great mystery to me a few years ago but now seems almost plausable, I will expose this on the next page. |

Even experts are sometimes wrong, before you spend thousands on a book, please do your own research! Just because I say a certain binding can be attributed to le Maitre isn't any kind of guarantee, don't take my word for it, go a step further and get your own proof. In these pages I have provided you with a way of doing just that. |
