I was surprised to see this flower pot in the decorative frame (dj-60) of the corners. This spot is usually reserved for armorial motifs such as crowns or other heraldic elements. These pots became very popular in the third quarter of the 18th century and Barber has catalogued a fair number of them. He has placed these tools in his Bulbous Vase Tool category and shows 15 different examples in his 2013 catalogue. |
In Comparative Diagram 1, we see three Barber models that are very similar to the Derome ones that we show here. I had great hopes when I saw these Derome examples, that we would find them in Barber's catalogue. However the first on this list (BV 2.) turns out to be a Louis Douceur example as found in Barber's reference notes (1749 Henault in a 1987 Laurent Coulet catalogue no.51). Meanwhile BV 4 does not match perfectly the Derome example found on the portefeuille (no. 217). The green arrows pointing out differences. Nor does the BV 5 model exactly match our Codex Maggi example, So we strike out here and this is probably another sort of proof that Derome rarely used these tools and or perhaps only in his later dentelles of this kind. |
In Comparative Diagram 4, I show examples of Derome's roulette dj-R-6, that we proved to be part of Deromes tools on a previous page these match perfectly the portefeuille example (e) proving that Derome also decorated this portefeuille that is found reproduced in Belles Reliures. Catalogue XII,
Gumuchian and Cie, Paris, 1929 Thus we can catalogue these Derome bulbous vase examples as (dj-BV-17), they are smaller than those found decorating the CODEX that we can catalogue as dj-BV-16. |

Even experts are sometimes wrong, before you spend thousands on a book, please do your own research! Just because I say a certain binding can be attributed to le Maitre isn't any kind of guarantee, don't take my word for it, go a step further and get your own proof. In these pages I have provided you with a way of doing just that. |
