On the previous page we were looking at bulbous vase examples in decorative frames. Today I started making a diagram to show the Derome Codex frame example compared with Gosselin and Dubuisson examples, I have done this before but now we have a better Derome imprint in which you can really see the detail. Then I was wondering if I had a Jubert example of this type and after searching high and low I finally found some Jubert decoration with this frame, you can see it on the Portefeuille shown above that is found online in the Koller auction catalogue.Koller has an excellent zoom function that allows you to view their items highly magnified. Here then we find JubertÕs imprints in great detail, however we do not know the scale. The first experiment then was to make an overlay diagram with the Derome imprint dj-12. Now I know you will be saying "I thought you said this portefeuille was decorated by Jubert" and indeed it was, as can easily be proven with the many Jubert imprints found here and especially his own bird tool fer à l'oiseau. However here is a shock for many Derome fans, Jubert has used within his decoration important Derome tools, thus we see the Derome corner (signature) imprint here on this Portefeuille, as is proven by the overlay in Comparative Diagram 2. |
In Comparative Diagram 2, we kill two birds with one diagram we have resized the Portefeuille imprint to fit the Speculum example (with the flaw identifier), by doing this exercise we are then able to rescale the whole corner diagram to be at 100 percent scale. |
In Comparative Diagram 5, we come to the inescapable conclusion that both of these imprints derive from the same Derome tool. Click to see the enlargement where you will notice a small but obvious flaw that serves as an identifier (pointed out by the green arrows). There are other clues that enable further verification however this isn't really necessary. It is interesting to note that Koller state in their information about this Portefeuille that it dates from 1775 to 1780, this is late in the game for Derome who, by this time, had been doing this work for nearly 20 years. Hiring Jubert to do this decoration might have seemed like a good option when more money could be made by decorating rare and valuable manuscripts. The fact that Jubert was allowed to use Derome's tools for part of this work is very interesting and merits more research, we do not see for example Gosselin mixing tools while working on bindings for Derome, W.Cat 454 for example signed with Deromes ticket inside but decorated with 100 percent Gosselin tools. |
In Comparative Diagram 6 we see Jubert's jj-4 imprint fer à l'oiseau example from his own signed binding (click here to see it) compared with the Portefeuille example, this is strong evidence! |

Even experts are sometimes wrong, before you spend thousands on a book, please do your own research! Just because I say a certain binding can be attributed to le Maitre isn't any kind of guarantee, don't take my word for it, go a step further and get your own proof. In these pages I have provided you with a way of doing just that. |
