Now that we have eliminated all doubt concerning the non existance of a 1775 edition of Madame de Pompadour's Suite d'estampes gravees par Madame la marquise de Pompadour d'apres les pierres gravees de Guay, graveur du roy. we can get back to this dentelle binding by Derome le jeune, in which the Pompadour engravings are found. In Comparative Diagram 1, I show a very similar binding found in the British Library Database of Bookbindings shelfmarked Davis546. Mirjam foot in one of her recent publications, has stated that Davis546 is "after" 1761. |
I think she might have meant "around" 1761 because theoretically all of Derome le jeune bindings are after 1761, thats the year he offically became a bookbinder. Probably however he worked in his father's shop well before that date. I show below in Comparative Diagram 4, one of Derome's earliest bindings, it shows a strong mixture of his father's tools. In fact we do not know which tools we can separate into those belonging strictly to him and those of his father. What we can see is that he eventually stopped using certain tools that his father once used. |
In Comparative Diagram 2 we see many similarities in the design and the same tools being used. However by 1766 he changed some of the tools as we can see in Comparative Diagram 3. The major change is the roulette, this roulette can be seen on a number of bindings and is possibly significant chronologically. Also the roulette shown in Comparative Diagram 4, may be considered an early tool for Derome le jeune. In Comparative Diagram 6, we can see that Derome had not yet fixed his plan for this kind of arrangement, whereas by 1766 it was formalized and repeated. In fact it may be that this arrangement of tools may have been his standard practice for a number of years. Unfortunately very few of Derome le jeune's bindings can be given a fixed date of production, many of the books in these bindings are from earlier periods. The 1766 binding is one of the few that we can say for sure when it was made. |
I have perhaps overloaded this page with various Derome examples from various epochs, on the next page we are going to try to isolate the early examples. |

Even experts are sometimes wrong, before you spend thousands on a book, please do your own research! Just because I say a certain binding can be attributed to le Maitre isn't any kind of guarantee, don't take my word for it, go a step further and get your own proof. In these pages I have provided you with a way of doing just that. |
