First of all I would like to thank the British Library Database of Bookbindings for letting me show this very rare early example of a binding by Derome le jeune (click here to see this binding in the Database). When I first saw this binding I wasn't sure that it was a Derome, there are some unusual tools used here. Now that I have carefully extracted the imprints and catalogued them I am sure this is a Derome and I think an early one.

being added to the catalogue, yellow numbers indicating Jacques-Antoine Derome imprints.

In Comparative Diagram 1, we can see the extent of new (not previously catalogued) tools found on this binding, the lowest imprint 46-2a and 46-2b is a very important discovery, only found in early bindings, I have changed the catalogue number from jad47 as shown on a pervious page, to 46 as it is closer to the 46 imprints, and might not be a J A Derome tool that was passed down to Derome le jeune, but I suspect it is. Below in Comparative Diagram 2, I present a 2009 catalogue of Derome le jeune tools, I have not updated it with new tools, the most important tool missing from this diagram is dj-4-2. The main purpose here is just to show that I had already found many of the early tools but not all. Now that we know at least one certain J A Derome binding, finding a few more should be a lot easier, and I would not be surprised if many of the imprints on this binding are in fact from J A Derome tools.

*Note: the unusual imprint dj-7-3, is also found on a Derome binding in Raphael Esmerian's 1972 catalogue, Volume I, item number 22 which I have detailed here.

In Comparative Diagram 2, we see three bindings with early tools, specificly the 46a and 46b as well as assorted J A Derome tools. Also note the same or similar roulettes. On the next page we are going to look at one of the most interesting Derome bindings to have ever been auctioned by Sotheby's

A word of Caution

Even experts are sometimes wrong, before you spend thousands on a book, please do your own research! Just because I say a certain binding can be attributed to le Maitre isn't any kind of guarantee, don't take my word for it, go a step further and get your own proof. In these pages I have provided you with a way of doing just that.
