When I first saw this in Sothebeys online catalogue (click here to see it), I was stunned, here is a 100% obvious Derome le jeune binding signed by someone else!... and thinking, what if... this could be a real game changer as they say. However when you search for Jean-Henri Fournier you will find him in the catalogue of the Bibliotheque nationale de France, as well as an example of his work in which we see no evidence of Derome le jeune tools. |
In Comparative Diagram 1, I have catalogued the imprints as per the the Diagram on the previous page, however some of the Derome le jeune imprints (white numbers) are also possibly from the tools of Jacques-Antoine Derome, such as dj-35a and 35b. |
In Comparative Diagram 2, we see something realy interesting, first the spine details of J A Derome binding (very rare) then the same central tool used in the same way by Derome le jeune possibly around 1761 and then this Sothebys example that employes the same central tool as well as another J A Derome tool as well as a Derome le jeune pair of tools in the corners of the compartment, these mimic similar Dubuisson tools used in exactly the same way. A haunting question arises here and that is whether this binding could have been made in 1754. On the next page we will look at a 1752 publication with a Derome dentelle. |

Even experts are sometimes wrong, before you spend thousands on a book, please do your own research! Just because I say a certain binding can be attributed to le Maitre isn't any kind of guarantee, don't take my word for it, go a step further and get your own proof. In these pages I have provided you with a way of doing just that. |
