I want to show here two bindings that appear to show much in common. Binding No. 148 is found in a 1955 auction catalogue LIVRES ILLUSTRES DU XVIIIe SIECLE ,Paris, LIBRAIRIE GIRAUD-BADIN. I had to make sure of this, as is exactly 9 years ago that I first scanned this binding, auction information for it suggesting that it could have been made as early as 1760, and certainly we see J A Derome tools here that indicate either an early binding by Derome le jeune or a very late binding by J A derome. Binding No. 444 is a bit of a mystery also scanned almost 9 years ago I cannot find the catalogue from which this came and a search of the internet for the text in the information given turns up nothing, however a search of the arms of the comte d'Atois indicates that these arms are rare and could only exist after 1771. There is a wiki page for Colonels generaux des Suisses et Grisons (click here to see it) it shows that the comte d'Artois achieved this title in 1771. We see in the information for this binding that the armories are mosaic, it may that these are not the original arms and that the arms of the comte were pasted over the original arms, however the design of the dentelle has obviously been modified from the norm to adapt to a large central armorial. Otherwise it seems rather odd that this binding could be more than ten years older than binding 148. Note that in Comparative Diagram 1, we see that the dogs tooth roulette dj-R-1 is different on each binding. |
I decided to try to search the the words inscribed around the arms, here we see the weakness of Google if you search "ch. phil. fils de france, comte d'artois, colonel general des suisses et grisons" the exact inscription google cannot find it, by good luck I discovered a coin with this inscription by changing the search to "char. phil. fils de france, comte d'artois, colonel general des suisses et grisons." This inscription dates to 1772 or 1773 on the other hand i managed to find another copy of these arms without the inscription it is found on 1785 Almanach Royal, in the description of this Almanach we see that these arms have been identified (Olivier, Hermal et Roton, Reliures armoriees francaises, pl. 2550, variante du fer n¡ 12). I think we are safe to say that the arms shown on binding 444 are post 1770 and probably closer to 1773. Now this brings us back to the posibility that this binding was made by Jubert while working for Derome le jeune (see this page for more details) |

Even experts are sometimes wrong, before you spend thousands on a book, please do your own research! Just because I say a certain binding can be attributed to le Maitre isn't any kind of guarantee, don't take my word for it, go a step further and get your own proof. In these pages I have provided you with a way of doing just that. |
