In Comparative Diagram 1, we see a roughly 10 year period of Douceur's dentelle bindings, where the tools can be compared with those found in the mosaics. I have started this Diagram with a 1745 binding from the Bibliotheque nationale de France, they state that this binding derives from the atelier d'Antoine-Michel Padeloup. We are going to prove here that this is incorrect, this binding may have been made for Padeloup by Louis Douceur, however for the binding to come from the workshops of Padeloup we would expect to see an imprint from at least one Padeloup tool, but we do not. Below in Comparative Diagram 2, I have extracted the imprints from this very important Douceur binding, that we know for certain was made early in 1745. |
In Comparative Diagram 3, we compare the 1745 imprints that are also found in our mosaic binding No. 152 that is covering a 1739 L'office de la Quinzaine de Pâques and bears the arms of Mademoiselle de Blois, veuve du Regent. |
I am including here in Comparative Diagram 4, the Douceur imprint d-25. This imprint is a link to the 1754 signed Douceur binding, where few other tools from the Mosaic period appear. |
In Comparative Diagram 5, we see Douceur imprints from a 1749 Henault that may actually have been made in 1749, this binding is of interest as it has both, some of the 1754 imprints as well as the earlier mosaic imprints. The spine of this binding is particularly interesting as it has been decorated with some small tools that are found in the mosaics. The palette is very important, it has been found on bindings from 1746 (click here to see them). In the full sized enlargement of Comparative Diagram 1, you will notice that the spine of the 1744 Duclos has been decorated with this palette. |
In Comparative Diagram 6, we see these very small imprints on the spine of the 1749 Henault. The small tools that have been used to decorate the spine panels are also found in the decoration of the Wassermann No. 1144 an important mosaic binding that once represented the atelier de la tulipe. |

Even experts are sometimes wrong, before you spend thousands on a book, please do your own research! Just because I say a certain binding can be attributed to le Maitre isn't any kind of guarantee, don't take my word for it, go a step further and get your own proof. In these pages I have provided you with a way of doing just that. |
