The binding shown above has also been reproduced by Harthan on page 142, Plate 5, he describes this binding as "Mosaic binding probably designed and bound by Jacques-Antoine Derome l'aine" and gives the exact dimensions of 199x129 mm. Also he gives the title as Heures presentees a Madame la Dauphine, Paris (c. 1745). I show it below with two other bindings which I was very luck to find, one is found in the online collection of the Real Biblioteca PATRIMONIO NACIONAL in Madrid, the other from an Auction catalogue, of Thierry De Maigret that is also online. |
The amazing similarity in these bindings suggests that they were all executed around 1749. We see here some new tools being used, some that I have not previously catalogued. In the comparative diagram below I show where ever possible the extracted imprints with the their corresponding catalogue type models (in light green), and give the new items their own new catalogue numbers. Note that the imprint pd-15 is found on the 1749 binding but not on the other two, it appears to be virtually the only difference in the decoration of the boards. |

Even experts are sometimes wrong, before you spend thousands on a book, please do your own research! Just because I say a certain binding can be attributed to le Maitre isn't any kind of guarantee, don't take my word for it, go a step further and get your own proof. In these pages I have provided you with a way of doing just that. |
