The binding shown above is found in a 2015 Sotheby's online auction catalogue LIVRES ET MANUSCRITS 25 JUNE 2015 PARIS (click here to see it) I show also the information given for this binding. The arms Louis Ferdinand Dauphin de France appear to be very rare on bindings, thorough search with Google did not turn up anything remotely similer to this Sotheby's example however, fortunately I found another in my 2010 inventory of Dubuisson bindings, it is identical, and found on 1752 Semaine Sainte. (click here to see this same Dubuisson spine palette). |
The Dubuisson plaque binding shown above is found in the Madrid Royal Library, it covers a 1741 Almanach Royal, this is certainly one of the earliest of the Dubuisson plaques, and it is a remarkable preview of things to come, of large dentelle bindings that would dominate French decorative bookbinding for the next 50 years. It is as though the bookbinders of the mid 18th century siezed upon the design and decoration of these plaques copying the designs into single tools with which to build their famous dentelles. we see in this plaque batwings and it is no surprise that Pierre-Paul Dubuisson was soon using tools that appear to have been born out of these plaques. |
The binding c19c24, shown above is found in the British Library Database of Bookbindings (click here to see it). I continue to see this binding referred to as the work of Derome le jeune, if you have followed the last few dozen pages of mine you will know they have all been devoted to a study of Derome bindings, and thus you can believe me when I say that there are no Derome imprints found on this binding, Derome le jeune did not make this binding as I have shown on another few pages page (click here to see these pages). |
Probably one of the most beautiful and best preserved examples of this dentelle by Dubuisson is the one shown above that covers LA GIERUSALEMME LIBERATA (Jerusalem Liberated) by Torquato Tasso, published by Girolamo Bartoli: Genova, 1590. The reproduction of this binding can be found in a Drouot 2010 auction catalogue (click here to see it) Here on the spine of this binding we see more irrefutable proof that these bindings were made by Pierre-Paul Dubuisson, click here to see more examples of Dubuisson's signature fleuon that is the centrepiece of the spine compartments. |

Even experts are sometimes wrong, before you spend thousands on a book, please do your own research! Just because I say a certain binding can be attributed to le Maitre isn't any kind of guarantee, don't take my word for it, go a step further and get your own proof. In these pages I have provided you with a way of doing just that. |
