The binding shown above can be found in Sotheby's 2014 online auction catalogue (click here to see it). This is an important signed Dubuisson binding from the end of his career. Fortunately the Bibliotheque national de France has in it's Gallica digital reproductions another 1759 Dubuission signed binding that is identical in many ways with the exception of the painted armories under mica of the Sotheby's example. |
Sotheby's only mentions Dubuisson's ticket without showing it while it can be found in the BnF example shown enlarged above, I have read that Dubuisson designed and engraved this ticket himself, a close examination of this ticket reveals that Dubuisson was a artist with many talents who probably also painted this example of the arms of Madame Victoire. |
It would be hard to over estimate the importance of the Dubuisson palette shown in Comparative Diagram 1. This palette may in fact be a roulette, and is one of Dubuisson's favorites. Also note the spine panel corner imprints that are quite rare and will be easy to recognize if you ever see them again. |
In Comparative Diagram 2, we see something unusual, the same Dubuisson palette being used in the same way on a 1764 Almanach Royal. Poor Dubuisson was already in his grave a few years and now his tools were being employed by who? Delorme seems the most likely suspect. |

Even experts are sometimes wrong, before you spend thousands on a book, please do your own research! Just because I say a certain binding can be attributed to le Maitre isn't any kind of guarantee, don't take my word for it, go a step further and get your own proof. In these pages I have provided you with a way of doing just that. |
