The reproduction of the binding shown above comes from Cabral Moncada Leilões - Live and online auctions of Antiques and Works of Art... (click here to see this page). Below I reproduce their description and give a poor general translation. There are a few errors in this description such as calling this a moroccan citron, and a date of 1731 to 1788 for Derome le jeune.

Roger Devauchelle, "La reliure", p. 133 e seguintes.

Almanach Royal année M. DCC. LII ...- Paris: de l'Imprimerie de Le Breton, 1752.- 459 p .; 19 cm.- E. Noteworthy binding of the time, in Moroccan citron, sprinkled by small golden dots. The symmetrical decoration, identical in both planes, consists of a large central scroll, flanked by two exotic birds (peacocks?), Almost entirely executed in fine inlaid mosaics of five different colors and profuse use of small gold irons, sometimes with guilloche effect; spine with six inter-nerves, guilt edges. Inscription in pencil on the inside: "Binding surely of Le Monnier, circa 1752. J. Almarjão." The attribution certainly refers to Louis-François Monnier, or Le Monnier (maître in 1737). However, his son Jean-Charles Henri or other of his many relatives used the same nickname. However, bookbinders such as Padeloup le Jeune (d. 1758) and especially Derome le Jeune (1731-1788) can also be considered as possible or probable authors. Binding a little tired, with weak joints and signs of abrasion (silverfish?) With partial damage of some pages; retains only a double (rear) guard in pink silk. Roger Devauchelle, "La reliure," p. 133 et seq.

In Comparative Diagram 1, I compare this 1752 Almanach Royal with another Dubuisson binding that is found in the British Library Database of Bookbindings shelfmarked Davis564 (click here to see it) to show that the same imprint (pd-7-6open) has been employed and hand painted. This is shown enlarged in Comparative Diagram 2. Unfortunately the Cabral Moncada Leilões reproduction is not high resolution, however we can still see that, this is the same imprint, that has been carefully hand painted inside. The unpainted examples in this diagram come from the 1751 Almanach Royal that we examined on a previous page (click here to see it)

I have catalogued this imprint pd-7-6a-open and 6b-open for a number of reasons, there a number of these open tools that seem to appear together in certain bindings.

A word of Caution

Even experts are sometimes wrong, before you spend thousands on a book, please do your own research! Just because I say a certain binding can be attributed to le Maitre isn't any kind of guarantee, don't take my word for it, go a step further and get your own proof. In these pages I have provided you with a way of doing just that.
