On page three we have looked briefly at these imprints that Barber has called ornamented scrolls and in his description scrolling fronds. I have reproduced below (purely for scientific non profit purposes) certain relative examples from Barber's TOOLS LIST 9: FR page 406. Catalogue of Printed Books and Bookbindings : The James A. de Rothschild Bequest at Waddesdon Manor By (author) Giles Barber , Edited by Geoffrey De Bellaigue , Edited by Rosamund Griffin published in 2013 (click here to see this publication). The catalogue numbers that have be underlined in Comparative Diagram 1 are possibly Derome le jeune tools that Jubert employed on bindings while working for Derome. |
In Comparative Diagram 2 we see that Barber is careful to not tell us who tools these imprints derive from, but refers to the fact that some of them are found on bindings that contain Derome's ticket, such as FR 31. |
In Comparative Diagram 3, I compare Derome imprint pair dj-33-2 with Barber's FR 31 pair these appear to be the same imprints that derive from Derome's tools (Click here to see a catalogue of Derome imprints) |
In Comparative Diagram 4, we discover that Barber's FR 32 pair is the same as the Jubert imprints jj-33-2 pair shown in Comparative Diagram 1, even though Barber shows them on a Derome signed binding, now by a fortunate coincidence these very imprints can also be found on the Jubert BnB, RLR, RES-G-370 binding that also has a Derome ticket, and that we have been studying extensively due to the identical imprints found on our eBay binding. |
In Comparative Diagram 5, we discover that Barber's FR 33 pair is the same as the Jubert imprints jj-33 pair shown in Comparative Diagram 1, and again by an equally fortunate coincidence these very imprints also can be found on the Jubert BnB, RLR, RES-G-370 binding. I am smiling here as it has been over 10 years since I made the original catalogue of Jubert's imprints and this BnF binding has confirmed my attribution of these imprints. |
Here in Comparative 5 we see that the small tool imprints jj-34, jj-34-2, jj-34-3 are all found on this amazing BnF binding, Jubert must have thrown the kitchen sink in this one, using every tool he could put his hands on. The imprint jj-34 may be a Derome tool, Jacques Antoine Derome used the same or a very similar tool, we will need microscopic detail to know for sure. I show it below at 600dpi, the lowest example, Sotheby's 377 is from a Jacques-Antoine Derome binding, the Ricci and Maggs Bros are Derome bindings and the BnF certainly a Jubert, now what can we imagine? That Derome le jeune inherited this tool from his father and that Jubert borrowed it from Derome, or perhaps offered as gift to Jubert? The only certainty is that Jubert employed it here on the BnF binding. |

Even experts are sometimes wrong, before you spend thousands on a book, please do your own research! Just because I say a certain binding can be attributed to le Maitre isn't any kind of guarantee, don't take my word for it, go a step further and get your own proof. In these pages I have provided you with a way of doing just that. |
