The reproduction shown above can be found in the 2016 auction catalogue of THIERRY DE MAIGRET; LIVRES ANCIENS - LIVRES DU XIXE ET MODERNESDOCUMENTS HISTORIQUES ET AUTOGRAPHES DE LA RÉVOLUTION ET DE L'EMPIRE, Drouot Richelieu - Salle 4, Vendredi 04 Mars 2016 14:00 (click here to see it). We do not know if this binding was executed shortly after the printing date of 1751, if so it would be then one of the earliest of our collection. The outer roulette of the boards does not seem to match any other binding in our inventory of 17 different examples. The crab DCR 28 is not present, and the imprint rf-3 is found for the first time in the corners. Thus we have a number of unusual characteristics that might indicate that this is an early binding. Below I show another Fetil example that may have been made a full decade later.

The reproduction of this next binding can be found in the same 2016 auction catalogue of THIERRY DE MAIGRET; LIVRES ANCIENS - LIVRES DU XIXE ET MODERNESDOCUMENTS HISTORIQUES ET AUTOGRAPHES DE LA RÉVOLUTION ET DE L'EMPIRE, Drouot Richelieu - Salle 4, Vendredi 04 Mars 2016 14:00 (click here to see it). We are told in the auction information that this binding is decorated with the arms of Joseph Claude Mathias de Barral, and that this book was printed in 1729. We see that it was decorated by Fetil and therefore executed after 1748. To know exactly when I decided to check the history of Joseph Claude Mathias de Barral, and he is found in wikipedia as he was quite an important figure in the Catholic Church. "Il est nommé évêque de Troyes le 8 janvier, confirmé le 16 février et sacré par l'archevêque de Sens Paul d'Albert de Luynes le 29 mars 1761" Now I suspect that his arms are those of an évêque de Troyes with three rows belles. and that he could not have had these armories before 1761 and that this binding by Fetil must have been executed sometime after or around 1761. This corresponds with the drawer handle roulette rf-R-7 that frames the boards and is also seen on another binding that dates to 1763. When we compare this binding with the binding shown at the top of the page we see there is a big difference in the decorative tools that were employed, some of these later tools may actually derive from the Royal workshops of Louis Douceur.

A word of Caution

Even experts are sometimes wrong, before you spend thousands on a book, please do your own research! Just because I say a certain binding can be attributed to le Maitre isn't any kind of guarantee, don't take my word for it, go a step further and get your own proof. In these pages I have provided you with a way of doing just that.
