The binding reproduced above is from The James A. de Rothschild Bequest at Waddesdon Manor. Printed Books and Bookbindings, by Giles Barber 2013. Below I show some of his text for this item W.Cat. 502. in which he details the imprints with his catalogue reference numbers. I have gathered together his actual imprint models in Comparative diagram 1. |
In Comparative Diagram 1, I show Barber's models as they have been reproduced in his book, he makes no mention of scale in his illustrations we have to assume that they have all been reproduced at the same 300 dpi scale. We can see that the example SP 34 imprints, that are found in the corners of the spine compartments are actually the tails of FR 54, and that DCT 38 is actually two different imprints joined together, you can see the separate imprint (rf-7-3) along the sides near mid-point and I show it in a separate diagram below Comparative Diagram 2. |
Now that we have good grasp on the tools of René-François Fétil, I want to present a binding that was a mystery when I first saw it over 12 years ago, not a Derome not a Dubuisson or a Jubert nor a Douceur or Monnet, a real puzzle that I am going to reveal on the next page. |

Even experts are sometimes wrong, before you spend thousands on a book, please do your own research! Just because I say a certain binding can be attributed to le Maitre isn't any kind of guarantee, don't take my word for it, go a step further and get your own proof. In these pages I have provided you with a way of doing just that. |
