The reproduction of the binding shown above is found online with Gallica from the Bibliotheque nationale de France as I said on a previous page, the only way that you will find a Fetil binding in the BnF is by accident and here I have done it. With all their resources and expertise the BnF do not know / recognize the workshop or the binder who produced this dentelle. A dentelle for Louis XV and Madame Pompadour, the most influential woman of the century, patron of the Arts who has chosen René-François Fétil to create this inner dentelle bearing her arms. I find that this is scandalous and unacceptable that René-François Fétil, where ever he is now must accept, this humiliation to be totally unrecognized by the highest (supposedly) authority in France... and its not too hard to do if I can do it! They only need to look carefully at Barber's work to make this discovery and I know they have Barber's books because the references to them abound here at the Bibliotheque nationale de France. Below I show a screen capture of the BnF page for this binding RES-G-2972 with all the paraphernalia and elaborate descriptions, giving the imperession that they know what they are talking about, very annoying. |
Someone who has not read the previous 7 pages, is bound to ask, how can I be so sure? In Comparative Diagram 1, we see an imprint from this binding RES-G-2972 compared with Barber's model DCR 28 and then an overlay of the two. DCR 28 is a major key imprint to identifying Fétil's work as we saw on our first page. |
As we can see in this next binding shown above Fétil made more than one binding for Madame de Pompadour, I found this reproduction on the Bibliophile web site of Bertrand Hugonnard-Roche (click here to see it) Unfortunately this reproduction is too small to use, however here we see the same identical Pompadour arms and note the fact that this binding is at least from 1762. Here we see (barely) some new tools being used by Fetil, these may help us to identify yet more dentelle bindings by René-François Fétil. It looks like a Fetil but we need to examine the imprints to be sure, I am surprised to see some of these tools and suspect that this may be another imitation. |

Even experts are sometimes wrong, before you spend thousands on a book, please do your own research! Just because I say a certain binding can be attributed to le Maitre isn't any kind of guarantee, don't take my word for it, go a step further and get your own proof. In these pages I have provided you with a way of doing just that. |
