The image and text shown above comes from the Catalogues of LIBRARIE SOURGET. In Catalogue number XIX, 1999, page 282, Lot 110. We see here the armes of Marie-Joséphine de Savoie, comtesse de Provence and suspect that this binding may have also been executed by François Gaudreau. I do not show the first volume in the reproduction above, due to the largeness of the catalogue and the smallness of my scanner, I could have tricked you with a virtual volume one but that wouldn't be cricket as they say. Nevermind we can still see here most of the important details. A close inspection of the imprints found in these two examples clearly shows that some of them derive from identical tools, the tools of François Gaudreau, who appearently made bindings for both sisters as well as Marie Antoinette.

The binding and text shown below derive from the same LIBRARIE SOURGET Catalogue number XIX, 1999, page 305, Lot 120. Here we see the identical arms as those of Quinault, along with a central fleuron that is a certified Gaudreau tool. The raised bands are decorated in an identicaal fashion, while the palette at the base of the spine is different to all our previous examples.

The image and text shown above can be found in the online catalogues of LIBRARIE SOURGET. (catalogue number 27, page 90, lot 36. The images from the pdf catalogues cannot be enlarged with their limited resolution so I am showing them here as they are in the catalogue. We can see that this is another Gaudreau with some identical tools and methods only the palettes at the top and bottom are different. Note that this book was published in Paris, by Moutard, Libraire de la Reine, 1776. I was wondering if the publications of Moutard might lead us to more Gaudreau bindings and sure enough, searching the internet, I found another set for sale on Abebooks.

enlarged detail

Here we can enlarge the bookseller's photo to see clearly the detail of these imprints. The palette is rather special and if you find a binding with a palette like this, these small details will give you the proof you need.

A word of Caution

Even experts are sometimes wrong, before you spend thousands on a book, please do your own research! Just because I say a certain binding can be attributed to le Maitre isn't any kind of guarantee, don't take my word for it, go a step further and get your own proof. In these pages I have provided you with a way of doing just that.
