The Boyet binding "à La Vieuville" shown above is found on the website of Binoche et Giquello (click here to see it). I am showing this binding in relationship to the previous two pages where we have been trying to identify the author of a golden sharksteeth dentelle. This dentelle is bordered by a roulette that is very similar to Boyet's roulettes that we have catalogued as roulettes "P'. In this binding above we see a similar roulette. In the 1937 publication La Bibliotheque de feu Edouard Rahir Ancien Libraire; Cinquieme Partie; Livres Anciens des XVe, XVIe et XVIIe Siecles; Belles Reliures Anciennesby Edouard Rahir we find a very similar binding. |
These two bindings are not only similar the were both owned and signed by Duvivier, however it was not easy to find the exact size of these bindings, after a long search I found a bookseller (Edition-Originale click here to see it) selling the same Knox publication and they gave a height of 16.5 cm |
In Comparative Diagram 1, we see these bindings at the same scale, I corrected the Rahir example by a comparative resizing of the interior roulettes. Even though these bindings appear to have an identical decoration, they are not exactly the same size. |
Armed with these precisely sized bindings I proceeded to construct Comparative Diagram 2. After juggling the roulette strips we discover a gap that allows us to align all strips and calculate the exact length of the Vieuville roulette, 9.50 cm or 950 mm. |
I had previously completed the same exercise with the BL 688a10 sharksteeth dentelle roulette, that is shown in Comparative Diagram 3, fortunately I found certain excentricities in this roulette that permitted me to calculate its length (8.75 cm or 875 mm) it is not the same as the Vieuville roulette. |
In Comparative Diagram 4, I have collected all the Boyet P roulettes catalogued so far so far, this new Vieuville example is the longest at 9.50 cm and has been listed as P-5. The sharksteeth roulette is of a different length and the units are larger giving a smaller unit per length count. P-4 looks suspiciously like P-5 and perhaps the length of this binding was not calculated correctly. In conclusion we do not find any matching Boyet roulette for the sharksteeth dentelle roulette, on the otherhand I have not found any Padeloup binding with this kind of roulette. |

Even experts are sometimes wrong, before you spend thousands on a book, please do your own research! Just because I say a certain binding can be attributed to le Maitre isn't any kind of guarantee, don't take my word for it, go a step further and get your own proof. In these pages I have provided you with a way of doing just that. |
