The binding and information shown above is from the critically important Reliures françaises du XVIIe siècle : chefs-d'¦uvre du Musée Condé, grands décors (1615-1665) et reliures pour les curieux (1690-1710) by Isabelle de Conihout, Pascal Ract-Madoux, Published 2002. In this work the authors have presented 22 Boyet representative examples selected from the hundreds of bindings from the Boyet workshops that they have examined. These they have arranged in 10 different groups, the binding shown above falls into group 3. I have selected this group for this part of our study of Boyet's tools, due to the proliferation of tools that were employed in decorating these bindings. |
In Comparative Diagram 1, we see the extracted imprints from the Isabelle de Conihout, Pascal Ract-Madoux Boyet binding 30. Three imprints here follow their classification fer 2 + 5 and their palette IV. Below I have reproduced Edouard Rahir's item No. 1599 found in his 1937 publication La Bibliotheque de feu Edouard Rahir Ancien Libraire; Cinquieme Partie; Livres Anciens des XVe, XVIe et XVIIe Siecles; Belles Reliures Anciennes. This would fall into the same Group 3 Reliure - Louis XIII-Anne d'Autriche sans chiffres. I have included Rahirs information about this binding. |
In Comparative Diagram 2, I have assembled the Boyet imprints from Rahir No. 1599, some of these are also found in Comparative Diagram 1. However there are a few imprints here that have not been previously catalogued. The corner tools are not included in Comparative Diagram 2, as they are not well represented in this binding, we will encounter them a bit later. As we progress through these pages we will compile a complete catalogue of the imprints of Boyet's tools. This added to the 2002 work of Isabelle de Conihout\ and Pascal Ract-Madoux, this will allow an easier identification of Boyet's bindings. |

Even experts are sometimes wrong, before you spend thousands on a book, please do your own research! Just because I say a certain binding can be attributed to le Maitre isn't any kind of guarantee, don't take my word for it, go a step further and get your own proof. In these pages I have provided you with a way of doing just that. |
