The binding shown above is found in The British Library Database of Bookbindings (click here to see it) I want to thank the British Library for letting me show you this amazing binding, and to remind you that all the images at the British Library are under copyright. I have decided to make a few pages with Boyet all over designs, so that we can catalogue his tools or rather the imprints from his tools. Here we see some important imprints even though somewhat harder to see on velin. |
In Comparative Diagram 1, we see the extracted imprints from Davis473 we have no idea what is inside this binding nor do we know when it was bound however, we can see these very same imprints in many of Boyets all over design covers and doublures. |
In Comparative Diagram 2, we can see how lab 14 and 15 have been used extensively and in a similar way, lab-branch-1 with 10 leaves has been replaced by a larger 12 leaf example (lab-branch-2) that is becoming dominant in the design with three more branches. Imprint lab-1d has been joined by lab-1c (shown in Comparative Diagram 3). |
In Comparative Diagram 5, I have arranged all of the Boyet branches that we have encountered. The black and white examples are from Esmerian No. 51 (Vol II 1972), we are going to try to establish whether No. 51 is a Boyet or not. |

Even experts are sometimes wrong, before you spend thousands on a book, please do your own research! Just because I say a certain binding can be attributed to le Maitre isn't any kind of guarantee, don't take my word for it, go a step further and get your own proof. In these pages I have provided you with a way of doing just that. |
