BREVIARIUM FRATRUM B.V.MARIÆ DE MONTE CARMELI année 1698

Looking at the image shown above one wonders if this isn't the wall of some pre-Columbian temple. This is real archeology digging into the long lost past, and discovering treasures. Of the roulettes shown above, I have never seen the smaller one, probably someone has but it is new to me, it's my discovery and we need to give it a memorable name, like "Mayan Codex."

Comparative Diagram 1 - Boyet 1698 roulette codex 8.85 cm

After hours of juggling the codex roulette strips I finally found some sections that match, you can see this work in the enlargement. I estimate that this roulette is 8.85 cm. in length. I will gladly review any paper that can prove me wrong. This roulette stands out as being unlike any other of its time. Truly a masterpiece of invention, that defies all models past and present.

Comparative Diagram 2 - Boyet 1698 inner dentelle roulettes length = 10.43 cm

In Comparative Diagram 2, we see the very narrow inner dentelle roulette, after some study I managed to match up two strips. Even with 1200 dpi scaans this was no easy task, as I suspect that the application of this roulette was never too crisp even from the beginning. You can see the results by clicking the diagram for a full length enlargement. The red dot indicating a flaw or break in the imprint that occurs at an interval of 10.43 cm, again this may be considered as speculative.

Comparative Diagram 3 - Boyet 1698 board edge roulette

In Comparative Diagram 3, I show the edge roulette this looks like a roulette that I have already documented although its hard to imagine that it was used for edges.

Comparative Diagram 5 - Boyet 1698 board edge roulette vs 1700 Boyet inner dentelle roulette

In Comparative Diagram 5, I show the 1698 edge compared with a Boyet inner dentelle roulette. These two roulettes are perhaps the same, I have made no attempt to align the two or look for corresponding flaws or excentricities. This inner dentelle is found on another page (click here to see it) and coindentally Boyet has used this same roulette on the edges of the 1700 example.

A word of Caution

Even experts are sometimes wrong, before you spend thousands on a book, please do your own research! Just because I say a certain binding can be attributed to le Maitre isn't any kind of guarantee, don't take my word for it, go a step further and get your own proof. In these pages I have provided you with a way of doing just that.
