The binding shown above is found in a 2017 Sotheby's auction catalogue (click here to see it). This is an amazing discovery, here we find the same spine palettes as we found on the 1611 bordure du Louvre binding that we have documented on page 11. |
In Comparative Diagram 3, we see that the corner imprints are the same and that the fleuron is very similar as though simply a modified version of the original to fit a different panel format, these fleurons need a number, we can start at small inventory of spine fleurons, shown below the first row of six are the original six catalogued by Isabelle de Conihout & Pascal Ract-Madoux 2002, shown with their original rubbings as well as actual specimens in color as well as black and white. Below this are a few fleurons that we have been looking at in the past pages. Number 9 and 10 are the ones shown above in Comparative Diagram 3 and probably date to around 1688. Number 14 and 17 are found on a 1688 Breviariun, the floral componants of number 17 may indicate that there is a commmon bond here and the date of 1688 may actually be close to these examples. Number 11 found on a 1688 publication and which I do not have in a face on presentation is obviously closely linked to number 12, which is our 1698 Breviarium. |
Now to get back to this bordure du Louvre binding which may have been executed by Boyet around 1688, we notice in the auction information about this item that the Sotheby's experts have attributed this binding to Boyet. and mention the use of roulette C in reference to Isabelle de Conihout et P. Ract-Madoux, Reliures françaises du XVIIe siècle, chefs-d'oeuvre du Musée Condé |
In Comparative Diagram 5, I have placed the roulette imprints from this binding to compare them with Boyet roulette 7 (from page 11 bordure du Louvre binding) and the Boyet roulette C mentioned in the binding description). We can see that this is not the roulette C, but in fact, the same roulette as we found in our other Boyet bordure du Louvre binding. |
In Comparative Diagram 9, we see some excellent examples of the Isabelle de Conihout et P. Ract-Madoux palette VI. The Sotheby's experts were correct in this part of their description. We see here 2 other palettes as well, these palettes need identifying names. Therefore I have assembled some of the various Boyet palettes below in Comparative Diagram 10. The upper part of this diagram shows the Isabelle de Conihout et P. Ract-Madoux, 2002, models from rubbings as well as actual colored specimens. In the lower part of this diagram I have assembled a variety of additional Boyet palettes, the black and white models at the bottom of the page are from Metivier 2002. A few of these palettes are not actually palettes they are often used as palettes but are in fact roulettes. I will need to make a roulette diagram next. |

Even experts are sometimes wrong, before you spend thousands on a book, please do your own research! Just because I say a certain binding can be attributed to le Maitre isn't any kind of guarantee, don't take my word for it, go a step further and get your own proof. In these pages I have provided you with a way of doing just that. |
