The photographs shown above were sent to me by a great bibliophile who realized the importance of this dated Boyet. We have spoken of these dated bindings on page 14. (click here to see it) where we show another 1696 dated binding. In as much as it is a larger binding the spine panel decoration is different.

The binding shown above is found in a 1998 LIBRAIRIE SOURGET - MANUSCRITS ET LIVRES PRECIEUX - CATALOGUE N° XVII, page 174, lot 53. Here we see yet another signed binding by Boyet, this one however is 1695.

Comparative Diagram 2 - Boyet's écussons (date encadrements)

Below I show page 71 from Isabelle de Conihout & Pascal Ract-Madoux Reliures françaises du XVIIe siècle, Paris, 2002. This is the first Boyet binding that they present and they call this first group of bindings Reliure aux écussons, this I take to mean bindings with this particular date encadrement (stamp), in their text they mention finding many of these bindings and two that were "decor Louis XIII-Anne d'Autriche sans chiffres" this corresponds with the binding shown at the top of our page. This is highly important as it places this group of bindings within this time frame.

(click here to see this diagram at 300 dpi)

In Comparative Diagram 5, I have assembled bindings that appear to have alot in common, the three bindings on the far right 1695, 1695, and 1696 were probably made on those dates, while the others may or may not have been made on the dates shown. The spine panel decoration of the 1693 binding closely resembles that of the 1696, particularly the small satellite fleur-de-lis, we have seen these on some other bindings as well, and it may be that they all were made in this same period, Also there is a strong correspondence between the 1695 spine shown in Comparative Diagram 3, and the 1689 spine shown in Comparative Diagram 4, note the six satellite stars and 4 satellite dots. Of course branches predominate. It would seem that Boyet made a lot of bindings in this period as today it may be that 80% of Boyet's published bindings come from this period of branches in the spine panels (a very rough guess).

A word of Caution

Even experts are sometimes wrong, before you spend thousands on a book, please do your own research! Just because I say a certain binding can be attributed to le Maitre isn't any kind of guarantee, don't take my word for it, go a step further and get your own proof. In these pages I have provided you with a way of doing just that.
