On a previous page we were looking at a Plumet copy of an imprint that Barber has catalogued as BV 2 (click here to see this page). |
In Comparative Diagram 1, we see Barber's BV 2 type model as well as his references, in those he mentions another example of this imprint is found in a Laurant Coulet catalogue, I found it immediately on eBay and now reproduce this highly interesting binding shown at the top of the page. The BV 2 imprint from that 1749 Henault is shown under Barber's model. However I have discovered another Plumet example to match the No. 114 Plumet example. |
The reproduction shown above is from Manuscrits et Livres Precieux Catalogue No XIII, Sourget, Patrick et Elisabeth, Published by librairie Sourget, 1996, page 449. I suppose that it could have been bound after 1756 or as early as 1752. What you will notice is that the outer roulette on this binding is the same as the 1749 Douceur shown at the top of the page |
In Comparative Diagram 2, we see that these roulettes are indeed identical and probably Douceur tools, because all the tools on these bindings look to be Douceur tools. |
In Comparative Diagram 3, we compare cataloged Douceur tools with those found on the No. 51 binding, all the catalogued tools match, however the Douceur BV 2 imprint is not the same as this No. 192 example, we could say that this is one of the first Plumet tools to show up in a Douceur binding. There are however a number of imprints on the No. 51 binding that I have not catalogued or seen before, this is probably a sign of something unusual. |

Even experts are sometimes wrong, before you spend thousands on a book, please do your own research! Just because I say a certain binding can be attributed to le Maitre isn't any kind of guarantee, don't take my word for it, go a step further and get your own proof. In these pages I have provided you with a way of doing just that. |
