The reproduction shown above is from Wikimedia Commons Bibliothèque du Grand Séminaire de Strasbourg reliures papillon XVIIIe siècle (click here to see this). On this page there is very little information about this binding, the image is attributed to Claude Truong-Ngoc.

Comparative Diagram 1- Imprints from the Strasbourg binding vs Fetil imprints and Plumet

Even though we do not know exactly when this binding was made we can still recognize the tools that were employed to decorate it. We see actually that most of the tools are those of René-François Fétil, two only tools might be attributed to Plumet, these I have tinted red

The reproduction shown above is from the 1935 catalogue La bibliothèque de feu Édouard Rahir, troisième partie. On the previous page we found two of Fetil's imprints on a Plumet Erasmus binding, here we see on this binding the same Fetil tool, it is placed prominently in the inside of the dentelle corners, this was an important signature tool.

I have produced a INDEX to my previous work on René-François Fétil's bindings, (click here to see this). In that INDEX you will find a collection of Fetil bindings, in that collection there is one binding that seems to have a lot in common wth the bindings shown above. I will reprduce it here again for comparative purposes.

Here again we see the same signature tool, This is really a Fetil binding I have no doubt about that, however the date when these bindings were produced remains a mystery. Looking at the BnF Douceur binding of 1758 that I have shown on the first page of this Plumet research, we see that these bindings could have all been made around this time c.1758. On the next page I am going to continue in this research of Fetil's bindings to try to establish a chronology as concerns the production of Fetil and Douceur and Plumet.

A word of Caution

Even experts are sometimes wrong, before you spend thousands on a book, please do your own research! Just because I say a certain binding can be attributed to le Maitre isn't any kind of guarantee, don't take my word for it, go a step further and get your own proof. In these pages I have provided you with a way of doing just that.
