The reproduction shown above can be found in the online catalogue of Bibliorare VINCENT FRAYSSE - Une grande collection: Cinq siècles d'enluminures, du XIIIe au XVIIe siècles (1260 à 1654). MERCREDI 18 NOVEMBRE 2015, 14h. Hôtel Drouot salle 9 (click here to see it). I found this binding previously in an old 1921 catalogue A catalogue of English and foreign bookbindings offered for sale by Bernard Quaritch Ltd. (click here to see it at Hathitrust Digital Library) then researching the title with Google I found what appears to be the same book in a modern auction which is what you see above however let us look now at the Quaritch example |
If you compare the dentelles of these two bindings you will see that they are very similar if not identical, however the arms in each case is different, on the next page we are going to look at another example that appears to have been made with some of the same tools and is said to have a Plumet signature. |

Even experts are sometimes wrong, before you spend thousands on a book, please do your own research! Just because I say a certain binding can be attributed to le Maitre isn't any kind of guarantee, don't take my word for it, go a step further and get your own proof. In these pages I have provided you with a way of doing just that. |
