The reproduction of the binding shown above is found in a Sotheby's online auction catalogue LIVRES ET MANUSCRITS 25 JUNE 2015 | 2:30 PM CEST PARIS (click here to see it). On the previous page we discovered that another Sotheby's item that was attributed to a certain 'plumet' on the basis of his signature which we failed to find, however the point was there there were some imprints in the decoration of this binding that were similar to those of a British Library binding C6b18. We showed that there were enough disimilarities in the imprints as to raise some serious doubts about the two bindings being made with the same tools, however that research led me to this binding. |
In Comparative Diagram we see that these imprints are all very similar in size and shape, at first I never paid to much attention to the differences and I lumped all bindings with these imprints together, however now I can see there are distinct differences. The Relieur Royal examples will lead us to yet more important bindings, the two lower examples are from C6b18. On the next page we are going to look at more examples with imprints that match those of C6b18. At this point we do not know the identity of this binder, we can see that he is working for Royalty and I know he has been very active, he is an important binder that we have yet to inventory correctly, for now we can call him the Relieur Royal. |

Even experts are sometimes wrong, before you spend thousands on a book, please do your own research! Just because I say a certain binding can be attributed to le Maitre isn't any kind of guarantee, don't take my word for it, go a step further and get your own proof. In these pages I have provided you with a way of doing just that. |
