The reproduction of the binding shown above is found on a 2015 Sotheby's online auction page LIVRES ET MANUSCRITS 25 JUNE 2015 - 2:30 PM CEST PARIS. (click here to see it). We do not know if this binding was executed in the same year that the book it is covering, was published. However we have already catalogued most of the tools, seen in the decoration of this binding. |
In Comparative Diagram 1, we compare the corner of the possibly earlier Semaine Sainte binding (click here to see it again) with this 1770 Dorat. At first I thought all the imprints were the same however when you look closely you see that the scrolls of the 33 pairs are smaller in the 1770 example. |
When I was collecting stone tools in the South Pacific, often in a large freshly tilled open field that had just been washed down with a light rain, the tools would often be mostly below the surface with only a small part exposed by the rain, some stones might be tools while many would be less interesting, it was in that exercise that I learned to appreciate the expression, leave no stone unturned, Comparative Diagram 3 is something of a similar vein, here we are attempting to establish, through orientation, whether this imprint has recognizable characteristics. We can see that in most cases the foot that is pointing to a 7:30 o'clock position appears to be somewhat smaller than the rest. |
On the next page, I am going to reveal a way to find a verified 1782 dentelle binding by Étienne II Anguerrand. |

Even experts are sometimes wrong, before you spend thousands on a book, please do your own research! Just because I say a certain binding can be attributed to le Maitre isn't any kind of guarantee, don't take my word for it, go a step further and get your own proof. In these pages I have provided you with a way of doing just that. |
