The binding shown above is found in the Musée royal de Mariemont and can be seen online in the Catalogue officiel des collections d'art et de Patrimoine culturel de la Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles (click here to see it). Delorme used some different tools on this mosaic compared with the other examples that we have looked at that form a group of very similar bindings. My date of c. 1765 is only a guess that takes into consideration these different tools. |
On page 4 of this study we examined a Delorme mosaic binding found in a Sourget Catelogue where they mentioned the existance of 3 other similar bindings with references to each, I have tracked them down and present them here in Comparative Diagram 3. I suspect that these bindings were all made around the same time, that may be related to the untimely death of Madame de Pompadour in April of 1764. |
In Comparative Diagram 4 we look at examples of Delorme imprint jd-6-2, this is one of Delorme's signature tools a favorite that he used often for many years. It appears on only one of these bindings (shown at the top of the page) along with a number of other tools that are not seen on the other bindings as well as a significantly different design layout. However I think it is important to note that the spines of all examples are decorated with the same palette. This palette is much like the Dubuisson rodeo palette that was a long standing favorite of Dubuisson. On another page we are going to look at this palette difference further as it is a good way to identify and differentiate the decoration of these two artists. |

Even experts are sometimes wrong, before you spend thousands on a book, please do your own research! Just because I say a certain binding can be attributed to le Maitre isn't any kind of guarantee, don't take my word for it, go a step further and get your own proof. In these pages I have provided you with a way of doing just that. |
