The binding shown above is found in 2017 Christie's auction (click here to see this). This is an important discovery for our Delorme research, that is linked to his Almanach Royal bindings in the Royal Library of Spain |
In Comparative Diagram 1, we see now the relationship of the past few pages, where we have concentrated our imprint research that can now be focused on this 1788 binding that encapsulates almost 30 years of Delorme's history of decorative bookbinding. This mosaic binding is one of his last and we note a change in his choice of tools, and design. |
In Comparative Diagram 2, I have attempted to find some kind of flaw or charateristic with the detail of this roulette that would allow it to be measured, in as much as these imprints will be distorted by the angle at which the binding was photographed measurement will not really be possible, however because Delorme used this roulette on a number of bindings in the last part of his career it is important to study it closely. |
The binding shown above is another Alamanach Royal found in the Royal Libray in Madrid, we see here in this 1790 Almanach the same roulette as found on the 1788 Almanach. In Comparative Diagram 3, I have found a small defect that allows us to measure this roulette very precisely thanks to the excellent Royal Library reproductions with with rulers. |
Below I show Delormes 1776 signed Almanach aux armes de Marie-Antoinette compared with the 1790 Almanach Royal made for the King of Spain. We can see definite similarities even though decades separate these bindings. I suspect that the small tools used to decorate the outer edge of the green rococo boarder in 1790 and the inner boarder in 1776 are the same tools that Dubuisson (pd-49 pair) employed some 4 decades earlier. |
I have working on these last few pages to build up to a spectacular find, a signed Delorme binding that probably dates to sometime near 1790 we are going to look at that on the next page. |

Even experts are sometimes wrong, before you spend thousands on a book, please do your own research! Just because I say a certain binding can be attributed to le Maitre isn't any kind of guarantee, don't take my word for it, go a step further and get your own proof. In these pages I have provided you with a way of doing just that. |
