I showed this binding and text previously on page 13 however I did not find images large enough to really show this binding, now I have rediscovered this binding and the surprise was that the roulette that we see here is the same roulette found on the 1775 signed Delorme binding that is found in the Bibliotheque nationale de France, this is a direct link to Gruel's facsimile illustration of Delorme's signature and proves that they are one and the same binder. |
We can see now that the Delorme of Gruel's facsimile signature (that he attributed to Pierre Delorme) is the same binder and signature as the 1785 Telemaque example, and that this Delorme is the same Delorme that signed the 1775 mosaic for Marie-Antoinette whom the BnF has named Jean Delorme. Here we are becoming embroiled in a serious debate. I could or should avoid the situation by simply calling him Delorme tout court. In any case, I think that this binder is not René-Pierre Delorme as suggested by the experts of Alde. René-Pierre was born in 1751 and could not have been making elaborate mosaic bindings in 1761, in fact he was not maîtrise until the 18th of May 1774. Another calculation shows that if the Pierre Delorme of Gruel was maîtrise in 1763 it is doubtful that he could have a son who was maîtrise in 1774. The current owner of these Telemaque volumes, Heino Meyer was kind enough to send me the two photos shown below. You can find these books at his website http://heinomeyer.com/ |

Even experts are sometimes wrong, before you spend thousands on a book, please do your own research! Just because I say a certain binding can be attributed to le Maitre isn't any kind of guarantee, don't take my word for it, go a step further and get your own proof. In these pages I have provided you with a way of doing just that. |
