The photographs of this binding were sent to me by Erick Aguirre who has been researching 18th century French mosaic bindings. There is J A Derome ticket inside this mosaic, however a look at the spine shows the presence of unmistakable Dubuisson tools. |
In Comparative Diagram 1, we see the Dubuisson imprints pd-49 pair, each of this pair of very small tools is distinctly different from the other they are not symmetrical, as mirrored pairs often are or are supposed to be, here, one has a smaller head. |
In Comparative Diagram 2, we compare the Spaccio inner dentelle with examples of Dubuisson's use of this same roulette as inner dentelle, there is not doubt that this is Dubuisson's roulette however we do not know if he was using it or if Delorme was using it. If the ticket inside is real then I think this must be the work of Delorme. Erick Aguirre estimated that this binding would have been made around 1755 -56 in which case I doubt that Dubuisson, at this point in his career, would be tempted to do some occasional gold tooling for J A Derome. It seems likely that this Derome ticket is another of the many that have been fabricated by unscrupulous booksellers. |
One of the things that I noticed in this Spaccio binding was the treatment of the board edges, the only other time that I have noticed anything similar was on the 1765 signed Chenu bindings (click here to see them). In Comparative Diagram 3, I show the Chenu edges enlarged, this is a rather too similar treatment to be a coincidence, perhaps this was a new fad in 1765? If so then it might indicate that this binding was made sometime in the 60's and probably by Delorme. |

Even experts are sometimes wrong, before you spend thousands on a book, please do your own research! Just because I say a certain binding can be attributed to le Maitre isn't any kind of guarantee, don't take my word for it, go a step further and get your own proof. In these pages I have provided you with a way of doing just that. |
