The binding shown above is a recent addition to the British Library Database of bookbindings (click here to see it), I was elated to find this giant Delorme binding with many tools that I had not seen previously. I am not showing this binding in color as the imprints seem clearer without the color. |
Searching through Barber's PAL section of tools I discovered PAL 81 that looked like it was a matching imprint of this Atlas palette, I show this in Comparative Diagram 2. I was not convinced until I started looking into Barber's reference binding for this tool W.Cat 563, it is listed in the ROLL 74 references! That set me off searching the catalogue for more W.Cat 563 tools but I only found one so far SP 38, Shown below in Comparative Diagram 3, this is an incomplete imprint that Barber added to his catalogue even though he did not have a complete example. On top of this my copy of Barber's SP 38 was cut off so I will leave it up to the reader to decide if this pair of imprints from the 1774 Almanach shown on page 23 are in fact SP 38, bear in mind that they were found on W.Cat 563. |
In Comparative Diagram 4, I show another proof that this Atlas has offered, imprint del-liber shown in Comparative Diagram 1. This is the same imprint that is found in the corners of the elaborate inner dentelle of Liber conformitatum shown on page 8. |
ADDENDUM... even though this Atlas was printed in 1764 and the spine has had 1764 added to it, we will show on page 38 that this binding could not have been made before 1773. |

Even experts are sometimes wrong, before you spend thousands on a book, please do your own research! Just because I say a certain binding can be attributed to le Maitre isn't any kind of guarantee, don't take my word for it, go a step further and get your own proof. In these pages I have provided you with a way of doing just that. |
