The Delorme binding shown above is found in 2015 Alde auction Catalogue Collection Michel Wittock Sixième partie. Sale: Thursday 12 November 2015 (Click here to see the pdf). Even though this reproduction is of a limited quality we can still identify certain tools with confidence. On the previous page we saw a Delorme dentelle that was perhaps executed around 1762 about two thirds or more of the tools were those of Dubuisson, here 20 years later there only a few Dubuisson tools in Delorme's dentelle. |
One has to wonder about the obvious obsession that occured with the tool shown in Comparative Diagram 2, why did everyone want to have one of these? I think Delorme might have been one of the last of his contemporaries to aquire this tool as it shows up in his later bindings. This certainly looks like a copy of the Fetil model and hard see the difference. In as much as I have discovered one or two Fetil tools in the work of Delorme it may be that this is Fetil's tool! |
In Comparative Diagram 3, we compare various examples of what I used to call pd-37a and pd-37b. Barber gives W.Cat 8 as his reference to this imprint. Searching through his catalogue we find another imprint linked to W.Cat 8 that is DCT 27 , this is a distinct Delorme signature tool, so we know that this FR 22 pair also derives from Delorme's toolkit (note: DCT 27 is shown in Comparative Diagram I , as del-dct27-2 due to the additional satellite dots that Barber did not include in his type model). Now 10 years later I am wondering if it was not a mistake to catalogue these imprints as Dubuisson tools. A quick look through many Dubuisson bindings does not reveal this imprint. Perhaps it was a mistake I made mixing Delorme and Dubuisson bindings, something that is easily done as I will show on the next page. Now the good news is that we know Delorme used these tools often and they are a good way to spot a Delorme binding although quite small and you will need good quality reproductions to make a positive identification. |
In Comparative Diagram 4, I have offered you an indispensable tool to help you identify a Delorme binding, click on this image to see these imprints enlarged to 2400dpi. |

Even experts are sometimes wrong, before you spend thousands on a book, please do your own research! Just because I say a certain binding can be attributed to le Maitre isn't any kind of guarantee, don't take my word for it, go a step further and get your own proof. In these pages I have provided you with a way of doing just that. |
