If you were a collector of Dubuisson bindings, you would probably think that the binding shown above is surely a Dubuisson, then on closer examination you would start to guess that something is not quite right, it is the palette at the base of the spine it looks a bit like Dubuisson's favorite rodeo palette, but is not, and that would make you suspicious. |
In Comparative Diagram 1, we compare the palette of No. 62 with a binding that we have looked at on page 4, we know now that this is a Delorme binding, a particularly as we have looked at the imprints del-37a and del-37b on the previous page and here they are in the corner decoration of Tenschert 93. Not only that but the unusual corner tool between them is matched on binding 62. Thus we must conclude that this is not a Dubuisson, but was decorated by Delorme, perhaps around 1760 |
The bindings shown above are item 122 found in a 2013 Thierry de Maigret catalogue that you can find online in a pfd file, unfortunately the image quality of a pdf leaves a lot to be desired however I wanted to show you these bindings that anyone would guess to be the work of Dubuisson, however they cover a 1765 publication. We see then that Delorme, occasionally decorated bindings (as late as 1765) entirely with Dubuisson tools. |

Even experts are sometimes wrong, before you spend thousands on a book, please do your own research! Just because I say a certain binding can be attributed to le Maitre isn't any kind of guarantee, don't take my word for it, go a step further and get your own proof. In these pages I have provided you with a way of doing just that. |
