The reproduction shown above is from Heribert Tenscherts 2019 catalogue entitled « à compartiments ». This catalogue is a treasure chest of French 18th century mosaic bindings, however the catalogue information is as I have mentioned faulty. We do not see in the Tenschert information any mention of Pierre Delorme, we see however the name of Derome le jeune. I can state categorically that Derome le jeune did not have anything to do with this binding. I have detailed this binding on a previous page (click here to see it) on that page I was lamenting the fact that I could not find a high resolution reproduction of it. Here we can attack this problem once more with this Tenschert reproduction where we can see the details a bit clearer. On the page preceeding the 2017 page 16, I briefly outlined my research on a workshop that I referred to as the "Etat binder" (click here to see this). Over time I discovered that the Etat binder was in fact Pierre Delorme.

Comparative Diagram 1 - Etat binder aka Pierre Delorme.

I show in Comparative Diagram 1, a high resolution scan of a binding, that showed a curious mixture of Dubuisson imprints and post Dubuisson imprints. Click on this image to see an amazing enlargement, where there can be no doubt at to the intimate characteristics of these tools.

Comparative Diagram 2 - Etat imprint vs Tenschert 104 imprint with overlay

In Comparative Diagram 2, we see, especially in the overlay that these imprints are the same. This is an elaborate imprint that we can examine very closely in the 1200dpi enlargement, that leaves no doubt that these two bindings must have come from the same workshop.

Comparative Diagram 3 - Tenschert 104 imprint vs Pierre Delorme imprint (1775 signed binding)

In Comparative Diagram 3, we see that the Tenschert 104 imprint matches an identical imprint taken from the spine of Delorme's signed BnF binding, this then indicates that Delorme is also the author of the Tenschert 104 binding.

Comparative Diagram 4 - Giles Barber imprint PAL 59 vs Dubuisson pd-roulette-palette vs Tenchert 104 example

In Comparative Diagram 4, I show firstly Barber's PAL 59, that he claimed was a Derome tool, this is false and proof positive that he never discovered the J. A. Derome tool of this type which is somewhat different in size, thus we can assume that W.Cat 569 is a Dubuisson binding. Now with this small amount of amunition we are going to attack the cover.

A word of Caution

Even experts are sometimes wrong, before you spend thousands on a book, please do your own research! Just because I say a certain binding can be attributed to le Maitre isn't any kind of guarantee, don't take my word for it, go a step further and get your own proof. In these pages I have provided you with a way of doing just that.
