The reproductions shown above is found in an early Sourget catalogue Deux Cents Livres Precieux De 1467 A 1959 by Sourget, Patrick & Elisabeth, January 1, 1985. Shown in a back and white photograph. This was a great find and I started to extract the imprints right away, but within a few minutes I knew something was amiss, the imprints were mirrored, the image must have been printed with the spine to the left, probably a good idea as books seem unusual in a back cover presentation, but how could i be sure? I decided to investigate the marquis de Monteynard on Wikipedia (click here to see this) lucky because they show his family crest that has a lion rampant facing right. We see in the information given about this book, that it contained additionally documents, that dated to as late as 1772, we know then that this binding was made sometime after that. |
In Comparative Diagram 2, I compare this 132 binding with one of my original 2010 selection of bindings that I labled as Etat binder. Little did I suspect then that I would be using that binding as a comparative model 10 years later. These two bindings have a lot in common and especially the armorial emblem that I was able to use to rescale my 2010 scan and produce this diagram. Below I show the emblem overlay after the Tarif binding had been accurately corrected and rescaled (Comparative Diagram 3). Note that the central ornamant of the Tarif binding with the enscription "Marine de la Repu. Francaise" would have to have been added to this binding sometime after 1792. The similarities in the dentelle however suggest that the dentelle decoration would have been made around the same period as the 132 binding i.e. c. 1775. |
In Comparative Diagram 4, we see how Delorme has employed this pair of imprints. The top three examples are from 2 plague bindings and so are from 1769 to 1774. |
In Comparative Diagram 5, I have extracted this important pair of primeval looking fronds as Barber calls them. He has not catalogued any like these, and they should make good identifiers being such an unusual shape. |
In Comparative Diagram 6, I show again this important Delorme tool, you might say signature tool, as it is found in so many of his bindings that seem to cluster around 1770-1775 |
In Comparative Diagram 7, I show a palette found on a 1773 Almanach Royal, I think we can also see it on our 132 Binding and possibly the Tarif binding, I have found it on other Delorme bindings as well so this is an important palette to look out for. |

Even experts are sometimes wrong, before you spend thousands on a book, please do your own research! Just because I say a certain binding can be attributed to le Maitre isn't any kind of guarantee, don't take my word for it, go a step further and get your own proof. In these pages I have provided you with a way of doing just that. |
