The reproduction of this 1763 Almanach shown above is from an Christie's auction catalogue, Collection Michel Wittock Deuxieme Partie: Reliures a Decor Sous L'ancien Regime. Paris, November 8, 2004. Their photo of this binding is not large and even scanned to a maximum will not clear up the detail. However we can still recognize these imprints and make a comparative diagram to aid our research, first we need to straighten out the board. |
In Comparative Diagram 2, I have assembled most of the imprints visible in this selected detail. From our previous look at the Choiseul bindings of 1763 to I 1766 we can recognize some of these tools. One of the most important imprints that was missing from the Choiseul collection is found here del-1, this is a direct link to Delorme's mosaic bindings. |
In Comparative Diagram 4, you can see the del-1 imprint, along with many other classic Delorme imprints. In Comparative Diagram 5, I am pushing this 1763 binding to the limit of what is visible. I think we can see the same imprint that is found on our 1763 Almanach Royal, on an 1782 Delorme that we have examined recently (click here to see it). I have catalogued it provisionally as del-8-4. |

Even experts are sometimes wrong, before you spend thousands on a book, please do your own research! Just because I say a certain binding can be attributed to le Maitre isn't any kind of guarantee, don't take my word for it, go a step further and get your own proof. In these pages I have provided you with a way of doing just that. |
